Social marketing of the Lovers+ and Trust condom brands was the Society for Family Health’s first programme and its success led to the establishment of a separate organisation, PSI South Africa, which deals solely with this activity.
While SFH is a non-profit organisation, PSI turns a modest profit which in turn is used to finance other Southern African PSI initiatives.
Since the formation of PSI South Africa in 2013, SFH’s focus in the area of condom promotion and distribution has been on supplying government’s Choice condom brand to outlets outside the public health system.
SFH and PSI International
The Society for Family Health is affiliated to Population Services International (PSI), a global health organisation dedicated to improving the health of people in the developing world by focusing on serious challenges like a lack of family planning, HIV and AIDS, barriers to maternal health, and threats to the health of children under five years of age.
PSI was founded in 1970, is based in Washington DC and has programmes in 69 countries. More than 8 900 individuals work for PSI and its affiliated organisations.
A hallmark of PSI is a commitment to the principle that health services and products are most effective when they are accompanied by robust communications and distribution efforts that help ensure wide acceptance and proper use.
